Belarus Calls on Germany for Assistance
According to the Associated Press, President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus urged Germany to accept around 2,000 refugees stranded at the Belarus-Poland border on Monday.
Lukashenko criticized EU authorities for their failure to resolve the impasse and called on Germany to step in and help.
International Response and Allegations
Poland's actions at the border have garnered support from the European Union, NATO, and the United States. They have backed Poland's efforts to push back migrants attempting to enter Belarus. The Polish government has justified its actions as necessary for safeguarding the integrity of Europe's borders.
Meanwhile, the EU has accused Lukashenko's government of orchestrating the surge in migrant crossings as a retaliatory "hybrid attack". This in response to EU sanctions over Belarusian domestic protests. Belarus denies these allegations and maintains that it is not responsible for the influx of migrants at the border.
Border Clashes and Response Measures
Anna Michalska, a spokesperson for Poland's Border Guard, reported that approximately 300 migrants tried to breach the razor-wire fence into the EU on Sunday.
Michalska revealed that Belarus forces aided a group of roughly 150 "aggressive foreigners" attempting to cross by using laser and electric torch lights to blind Polish border guards.
Poland is arranging return flights for hundreds of Iraqi migrants currently housed in guarded centers for foreigners.
