London has been rated as the best city in the UK for job satisfaction, with Brighton, Bristol, Oxford, and Manchester closely following. This ranking is based on over 300,000 reviews posted on Glassdoor in the past year.
London leads with a top score of 3.92 out of 5, based on reviews evaluating overall job satisfaction, career opportunities, diversity and inclusion, work-life balance, pay and benefits, and workplace cultures. Bristol, Brighton, Oxford, and Manchester are the only other cities to score above the national average of 3.82.
On a regional basis, Greater and Central London companies received the highest job satisfaction scores. In contrast, North West England topped the scores for diversity, equality, and inclusion, with South East England close behind. Manchester also excelled in pay and benefits, while Sheffield recorded the lowest scores. Scotland ranked lowest among English regions and UK nations in terms of salaries.
Employees are increasingly demanding more from their employers, seeking better pay, career opportunities, and senior leadership. “Companies across the country are working hard to ensure employees feel part of a diverse and inclusive workplace culture that offers a sense of belonging, but there is still room for improvement,” noted Glassdoor’s Lauren Thomas.
Mental health received positive attention in North West England, Scotland, South West England, and Yorkshire & Humber, as well as in individual cities like Manchester and Bristol.
The issue of “parking” appeared in the pros and cons of nearly every region except Greater London, indicating it is a significant employee benefit and a focus for workers returning to the office, according to Glassdoor.
Hybrid and flexible working emerged as a key topic in positive employee reviews, particularly in the West Midlands, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the North East of England. Cities like Liverpool and Bristol specifically highlighted these aspects.
Workers frequently mentioned a lack of compensation and excessive bureaucracy in the cons of employee reviews. As competition for talent intensifies, providing a competitive and transparent compensation package is crucial. This approach not only helps attract talent and manage rising living costs but also supports company growth and expansion.
