Sweden sees immigration as a critical issue, with 44 percent naming it as one of their country’s top challenges. Following Sweden, Austria and Italy rank second and third, with 39 and 38 percent. Spain, Finland, and France come next.

One-third of the population in Germany, the European country generating the most headlines with its open border policy in the aftermath of the Syrian civil war’s escalation, believes immigration is a pressing issue.

Some experts believe that the invasion of Ukraine demonstrates the double standard that exists in many European countries when it comes to immigration issues.

Refugees from other regions are allegedly seen as a burden on social safety nets by residents of the corresponding countries. That is despite fleeing civil wars in their own countries and constituting a small percentage of the country’s inhabitants.

At the height of the migrant wave in 2016, Germany, for example, had approximately 745,000 people seeking asylum. This amounted to 0.9 percent of the total population, though the number of unreported people likely exceeded this figure.

This Statista graph depicts the countries with the highest proportion of respondents who consider immigration to be an important issue.
