Effective April 10, 2025, Brazil will reinstate visa requirements for citizens of the United States, Canada, and Australia, ending the visa waiver policy introduced in 2019 by former President Jair Bolsonaro to boost tourism.
The 2019 visa waiver was a unilateral decision aimed at increasing tourism, despite the fact that these three countries continued to require visas from Brazilian citizens. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s administration, emphasizing the principle of reciprocity, decided to reinstate the visa requirements.
Travelers from the U.S., Canada, and Australia will need to apply for an electronic visa (e-Visa) through Brazil’s official platform: https://brazil.vfsevisa.com. The e-Visa process is entirely online, eliminating the need to visit a Brazilian consulate. Applicants must submit the following:
🔸A completed application form.
🔸A recent passport-sized photo .
🔸A valid passport.
🔸Proof of sufficient funds (e.g., bank statements showing at least $2,000 or six recent pay stubs).
🔸A letter of intent detailing the purpose of the visit.
🔸Proof of return or onward travel.
The visa fee is $80.90, and the processing time is approximately five business days.
🔸United States: The e-Visa is valid for 10 years, allowing multiple entries with a maximum stay of 90 days per year.
🔸Canada and Australia: The e-Visa is valid for five years, permitting multiple entries with similar stay conditions.
Travelers planning to visit Brazil should apply for the e-Visa well in advance to avoid potential delays. The reinstatement of visa requirements reflects Brazil’s commitment to reciprocal international relations and may impact travel plans for citizens of the affected countries.
