Germany is quickly recovering from the effects of foreign travel prohibitions and has reclaimed its status as a top destination for Indian students seeking international education.

According to the latest numbers from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the number of international students studying at German universities increased again in the current winter semester.

This follows a substantial drop in summer enrollments in 2021, when the German government implemented Covid-19 travel bans on numerous countries, including India, delaying international travel.

At least 330,000 international students are now enrolled at German universities, according to a DAAD snapshot poll.

Despite the pandemic, the number of international first-semester students has increased again, to at least 72,000, according to DAAD predictions. The poll included over 160 German universities.

According to the report, the number of overseas students will continue to climb.

“The survey of our member universities allows us to look forward to the new year with hope: despite the pandemic, the number of international students in Germany continues to increase,” said DAAD President Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee in a note.

“The number of first-year students from abroad has also risen again after declines in the last winter semester. Increases of around 13 percent or more are much better than expected in the summer. These figures are a very good sign of the attractiveness of Germany as a place to study. They also show that the joint commitment of member universities and the DAAD to attracting and supporting international students is paying off, especially during the worst pandemic in 100 years.”
