In January and February 2022, Madeira saw a significant boost in investment through its golden visa program, raising around €2 million. The autonomous region granted four Residence Permits for Investment Activity (ARI) during this period, reflecting continued interest from international investors.
According to data provided by the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) to Jornal Económico Madeira, three ARIs were issued in January to citizens from Canada, Russia, and Iran. February saw an additional investment from an Australian citizen, totaling €590,000. This trend highlights the diverse origins of investors seeking opportunities in Madeira.
Since 2017, the golden visa program in Madeira has attracted substantial investment, particularly from Russian and North American citizens. Other notable investors have come from Brazil, China, South Africa, and Bolivia, indicating a broad appeal of the region’s investment opportunities. The program, which requires a minimum investment of €500,000, has primarily channeled funds into the real estate sector, contributing to the local economy’s growth.
Recent data cited by Lusa reveal that from 2017 to 2021, the investment captured through golden visas in Madeira reached €60 million. This substantial amount corresponds to 50 residence permits, underscoring the program’s effectiveness in attracting foreign capital. The real estate sector, in particular, has benefited from this influx, driving development and economic activity in the region.
On a national level, SEF data released in January show a 52% increase in investment through golden visas in December 2021 compared to the same period in 2020, totaling €42.1 million. This surge reflects a broader trend of growing interest in Portugal’s investment visa program, despite global economic uncertainties.
Madeira’s success in attracting investment through golden visas demonstrates the region’s appeal to international investors and its strategic importance within Portugal’s broader economic landscape. As the program continues to evolve, it is likely to remain a crucial driver of economic growth and development in the autonomous region.
