Employers in the United Kingdom have been warned about the potential impact of remote working by employees based outside the country on employee benefits and taxation.
Changes in working patterns triggered by the pandemic, according to a report from Aon, a global professional services business, have resulted in many employees not only working remotely from home, but also from outside the UK.
Flexibility and compliance
Although such flexibility “supports an employer value proposition” by increasing employee engagement and retention, it can also have repercussions for corporate policy and benefit packages, according to Aon. Pensions, medical benefits, and group risk plans are among the policies that could be affected, according to the research.
A picture that is complicated
“While it’s fair to want to meet employees’ requests in terms of where they work and live,” Adam Burn, Workplace Pensions Technical Lead at Aon, said, “there could be potential employee benefit difficulties if the employee’s work and home location is outside of the UK.”
