Ukrainian nationals studying in the UK – Visa schemes

UK Government Immigration Routes for Ukrainian Nationals

In response to the war in Ukraine, the UK government has introduced two specialized immigration routes to support Ukrainian nationals:

Ukraine Family Scheme

The Ukraine Family Scheme allows British citizens or settled persons in the UK to sponsor their immediate and extended family members from Ukraine to join them in the UK. This scheme aims to reunite families separated by the conflict.

Homes for Ukraine Scheme

The Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme enables Ukrainian nationals and their immediate family members to come to the UK if they have an approved sponsor who will provide accommodation for up to six months. This scheme is designed to offer temporary refuge and support to those displaced by the war.

Visa Permissions and Public Benefits

Successful applicants under both schemes will receive permission to live in the UK for up to three years. During this period, visa holders are allowed to work, study, and access public funds. This provision ensures that Ukrainian nationals can integrate into the UK and participate in various aspects of life.

Study and Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)

Permission to Study in the UK

Ukrainian nationals with immigration permission under these routes can study in the UK without needing sponsorship from a licensed student sponsor, which is typically required under the UK’s Student route. However, their permission to study is subject to the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS).

What is the Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)?

The ATAS applies to international students and researchers who are subject to UK immigration control and wish to study or research at postgraduate level in certain sensitive subjects. This scheme ensures that individuals working in areas potentially related to Advanced Conventional Military Technology (ACMT) or weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) are appropriately vetted.

Obtaining an ATAS Certificate

ATAS certificates are issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and are required for studying sensitive subjects. Universities and research institutions cannot permit international students or researchers to begin their studies or research without this certificate.

Checking Requirements and Application Process

To determine if an ATAS certificate is needed, identify the CAH3 code for your course or research. Your Higher Education Institute (HEI) or employer can provide this code. Use the online tool to check the requirement.

To apply for an ATAS certificate, complete the online application form, providing information about your studies, employment history, and referees. Processing times are as follows:

  • Student Applications: Typically 20 working days (4 weeks), but up to 30 working days during peak periods (April to September).
  • Researcher Applications: Typically 10 working days (2 weeks), but up to 15 working days during peak periods.

Key Takeaway: Apply for the ATAS certificate as early as possible to avoid delays, as applications are processed in order of receipt and no fast-track service is available.
