The Portugal D7 Visa (also known as the Portugal Passive Income Visa) is one of several possibilities for foreigners who want to reside lawfully in this great European country. Notably, pensioners and people who have a passive income look for this visa. The D7 visa is part of the Portugal resident permit program. Visa holders will receive a unique tax status in Portugal, which will provide them with a 10-year income tax exemption.

The Portugal D7 visa has become well-known as a retirement visa in Portugal due to how easily you can obtain it as a retiree. However, it has a number of other options for different target groups. It is suitable for international migrants who want to move to Portugal and use this route to residency.

What is the D7 Visa for Portugal?

The D7 Visa is a permit that allows foreigners to live in Portugal. Visitors who have their own source of income in their home countries, which is passive enough to sustain their living expenses while they are overseas can apply for it.

Who is qualified for a D7 visa?

The Portuguese government enables the following groups to reside in Portugal under the D7 visa program:

Individuals from other countries or passive income in their home countries

A D7 visa is available to retirees and individuals who have passive income from sources such as intellectual property (e.g., musicians or inventors), real estate rental, investment interest, company profits, and dividends.

As you can see, the visa provides fantastic prospects and possibilities for foreigners who meet all of the conditions. Foreigners must apply for the D7 visa at a Portuguese Embassy or Consulate in their home country or place of residence, not in Portugal.

How can I apply for a D7 visa?

Foreign retirees and income earners applying for a D7 visa must demonstrate they have enough income in their home country to maintain their lifestyle in Portugal. Each applicant group has its own set of requirements.

Pensioners and Retirees

The Portugal D7 visa is available to retirees and pensioners of any age. Furthermore, the SEF (Portuguese Immigration and Borders Police) accepts any sort of retirement pension, as long as it fulfills the required minimum amount.

Non-retirees

A D7 visa is available to foreigners who can earn consistent and recurrent passive income from their rentals, intellectual property, financial assets, company profits, and dividends. Non-retiree applicants must meet the same requirements as retirees.

How long does it take to obtain a D7 visa?

It will take four to six months to complete the process.

It can take up to three months for you to hear back after you’ve submitted your application. If SEF approves your application, you will be issued a four-month temporary visa. During this time, you must apply for a temporary residence visa in Portugal by attending a SEF interview.

What are the requirements for the D7 Visa for Passive Income?

The Portuguese government needs to know if you want to live lawfully in Portugal and if you will be able to support yourself financially throughout your time there.

To obtain a D7 visa, you must show proof of income.

The requirements for proof of income for both retirees and passive income earners applying for the D7 visa in Portugal are the same.

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient income as stipulated in the SEF regulations in order to be fully compliant. The following are the required income amounts:\

  • Yourself (principal applicant): 100% of the minimum wage in Portugal (i.e., equal to or more than the Portuguese minimum wage)
  • If you include an adult (principal applicant’s spouse or parents): 50% more of the minimum wage in Portugal
  • A child under 18 years old (dependant children): 30% more of the minimum wage in Portugal
  • If you include a family member with a disability (dependent family member): 30% more of the minimum wage

As long as you can show that you have the required amount stated above for at least 12 months in a Portuguese bank account, you and your family can apply for a D7 visa.

All of your earnings must be consistent and well-documented. The embassy or consulate officers must be able to grasp the documented income evidence.

In addition to proof of income, you will need to present documents proving your accommodation and medical insurance in Portugal.
