Government's Plan Unfolds: Step 2 Initiates Reconnection

This initiative marks Step 2 of the Government’s comprehensive plan to reconnect New Zealand with the global community post-COVID-19.

Employers in various sectors eagerly await the reopening of visa applications, starting with uncapped schemes on March 14th at 10am (NZ time). Capped schemes will follow in staggered phases, with full reopening expected by September 13th.

Economic Impact: Revitalizing Key Industries

Before the pandemic, New Zealand welcomed approximately 50,000 working holidaymakers annually. The reopening of borders to this demographic promises to alleviate workforce shortages in critical sectors such as tourism, hospitality, and primary industries.

This move not only addresses immediate staffing needs but also injects vitality into seasonal industries that heavily rely on temporary workers.

Opportunities for Returning Visa Holders

A significant aspect of the reopening includes granting new visas to approximately 19,500 individuals who held a Working Holiday Visa before the pandemic but couldn't utilize it due to border closures.

These individuals are now eligible to travel to New Zealand within the next six months, fostering a swift return of skilled labor to the country’s workforce.
