The Netherlands provides appealing options in terms of quality of life, job opportunities, and access to higher education. Furthermore, it has ongoing investment programs. They target entrepreneurs who are willing to make significant investments in local real estate. The business needs to add value to the local market and help create new jobs.

The Dutch immigration law is comprehensive. It has a wide range of visas and residence permits available to individuals who choose to relocate to the Netherlands. Citizens of EU or EEA countries must meet very simple immigration requirements in order to live and travel in the Netherlands.

Nationals from any other country in the world can immigrate to the Netherlands. Specific provisions are residence permits granted for investing in the Netherlands, asylum residence permits, or residence permits for previously privileged persons.

The following are the ways in which a foreign national or investor can obtain permanent residency in the Netherlands:

  • as an employee: This is probably the most common way for foreign nationals to satisfy the Netherlands immigration requirements.
  • as an independent entrepreneur. Foreign investors who want to come to the country and start a self-employed business can apply for a residence permit in the Netherlands. One requirement is that their activities be beneficial to the Dutch economy.
  • as a highly-skilled migrant. A specific category of employees can obtain a residence permit in the Netherlands if they have an employment contract with a research institution or another employer in the country. It should be noted that this type of residence permit in the Netherlands is not available to EU/EEA Swiss nationals.
  • as a startup founder: investors who want to start a business. A start-up can apply for a residence permit for this purpose; the product should be innovative, and they should also collaborate with a dependable and experienced facilitator. When applying for a residence permit, the applicant must demonstrate that he has sufficient financial means to live in the country. They must present a business plan; the start-up company must be registered with the Trade Register.
  • as a student: obtaining a residence permit for study at a Dutch university is one way to immigrate to the Netherlands.

All of these methods of entering a foreign country, including the Netherlands, require the applicant to submit a special form. Along with this, you need the necessary documentation. You obtain it from the embassy or consulate of the country to which he or she wishes to immigrate. You complete the process prior to arrival in the new country. It is critical to plan the departure so that all of the documents are ready. You obtain the permit or visa prior to arrival in the country of choice.
