Ireland relaxes visa requirements for foreign doctors

As a result of the pandemic, the government of Ireland attempted to alleviate strain on the healthcare system by instituting a two-year multi-site General Employment Permit that allowed non-EEA doctors to work in Ireland.

In order to attract global talent and retain current talent, the Irish government has relaxed some immigration rules. They apply to some international doctors. The Irish government intends to open applications in March 2022 for doctors working in Ireland for more than two years. Stamp 4 permit will allow them to work without restrictions.

Employers will be able to hire foreign doctors without having to submit an employment permit application as their sponsor.

Furthermore, non-EEA doctors will no longer need to renew their immigration permissions every six months. They will do that rather once a year, resulting in less hassle and bureaucracy surrounding such applications.

These changes would boost Ireland’s competitiveness as a tourist destination. It can be interpreted as a recognition of non-EEA doctors’ contributions during the pandemic.

Other immigration-related improvements in Ireland expected in the near future include the implementation of a new Dublin residence card booking system and the consideration of new employment permit legislation this year. We will keep you updated on any new developments.
