Overview of the 5th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labor

The 5th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labor will be held in Durban, South Africa, from May 15 to 20, 2022. This pivotal event will act as a major milestone in the ongoing global fight against child labor, bringing together a diverse array of stakeholders to address this critical issue. The conference is set to attract over 4,000 delegates, including representatives from governments, trade unions, civil society organizations, and international bodies. These participants will collaborate to address the persistent global problem of child labor, which continues to affect millions of children across the world.

Current Challenges and Urgent Needs

Despite significant progress in some regions, child labor still affects approximately 160 million children worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened this situation. We face urgent deadlines: we have just three years left to eliminate all forms of child labor by 2025 and eight years to eradicate forced labor by 2030, as set by UN Sustainable Development Goal Target 8.7. The need for immediate and coordinated action is more pressing than ever.

Building on Past Momentum

The 5th Global Conference will build upon the successes and insights gained from previous conferences held in Buenos Aires, Brasilia, The Hague, and Oslo. By harnessing the collective wisdom accumulated from these events, the conference will focus on identifying and promoting effective practices, implementing urgent interventions, and formulating strategies to better protect children who are at risk of exploitation.

Conference Venue and Host City

Durban, located in South Africa’s picturesque KwaZulu-Natal Province, will host the conference at the International Convention Centre (ICC). Delegates will gather in Durban to engage in a comprehensive agenda of discussions, interactive workshops, and strategic planning sessions, set against the vibrant backdrop of the city.

Goals and Objectives

The primary aim of the conference is to develop actionable plans, mobilize essential resources, and raise awareness to ensure every child’s right to a secure and dignified childhood. The event seeks to advance global efforts toward eradicating child labor and forced labor, contributing to a brighter and more equitable future for children worldwide. Through collective effort and strategic action, the conference holds the promise of making substantial progress in the fight against child labor.
